For much of her life Martha dePoo has been painting the fast disappearing
Key West life that she grew up observing. As a child whose mother,
Suzie dePoo (Zuzek) was a well-known artist adept in various media,
Martha received expert nurturing and direction. After graduating
from Key West High School in 1973, she took a job in the art department
of Key West Hand Print Fabrics where she rose to department head.
There she received invaluable training in color and design as well
as the opportunity to create numerous tropical motifs for Lilly
Pulitzer.
Since 1984 Martha dePoo has worked as a full-time artist, participating
in many juried shows and winning numerous awards for her watercolors.
In 2006 the Key West Art & Historical Society hosted an unprecedented
ten week one-woman show of her paintings at the Customs House Museum.
After visiting the South Carolina lowcountry, Martha became enamored
with its distinctive culture and charm as well as its history. Now
dePoo is becoming known for her paintings which depict local inhabitants
from the past and the present enjoying the rhythm of lowcountry
life. Her ability to draw the viewer into the scene to share the
experience of the moment is one of the many engaging aspects of
her paintings. Her medium, watercolor, is demanding. It leaves little
or no room for error; no putting in or taking out. When experiencing
dePoo’s watercolors, it quickly becomes evident that this
artist works with ease and confidence within the medium to which
she has devoted and dedicated herself.
