Babette Bloch received both classical and modern training,
including study with Wayne Thiebaud, Robert Arneson, Deborah Butterfield
and Manuel Neri. For fifteen years, she experimented with sculpture’s
various mediums, combining traditional clay, plaster, and bronze with acrylic
paints, and her unique sensibility. She was always committed to creating
a personal style that could embrace her eclectic tastes, her sometimes-whimsical
visions and her technical curiosity. In discovering laser-cut technology
and how it can be used to transform stainless steel, she had found her medium.
Bloch begins with exquisitely refined black-on-white hard-edge drawings. The areas of black in the drawings represent the forms that will eventually be cut out of stainless steel. She computer scans the black forms and then directs a computer driven laser beam to precisely cut the forms she wants out of flat sheets of stainless steel placed on a laser “bed.” Some of the works are then sand-blasted, surface-textured, or painted for wall display, while others are transformed into 3-dimensional works through the use of industrial welding and shaping equipment. “I’m intrigued that I can continually meld the classic and the modern using stainless and lasers,” says the artist. “My studio process over the past twelve years of experimenting with this medium has been incredibly exciting and gratifying.” Bloch divides her time between site-specific one-of-a-kind artworks for specific or unusual places, and her limited edition works. One of her major projects, Reflected History, four monumental figures depicting the history of rice culture, is on permanent display at the Brookgreen Gardens Lowcountry Trail in Murrells Inlet, SC. Babette serves as Volunteer President of The Artists’ Fellowship, Inc, a foundation assisting professional fine artists in times of emergency. She also chairs the Roundtable Committee at the National Arts Club, NY, bringing educational programming to this historic institution. |
