Welcome to the
South! It is not so much a physical location
but a state of mind. The thirty works exhibited
here by five prominent artists embody the
essence of the South.
Each artist has experienced the South. Some
have grown up and lived their entire lives
here; some have made it their second home,
while others return to the South to get inspiration
for their work. Each has taken away personal
impressions and memories that are conveyed
through their art. Through their paintings
of landscapes, people, still-life paintings,
and sculpture, what comes across is a way
of life.
Ellen Buselli, Joseph Cave, Martha
dePoo, Ray Ellis, and Gwen Marcus, have
each made their reputations in the art world
through years of study and determination
to develop his or her own individual style
and technique in the making of art. The
masterful works in this exhibition present
the South through their eyes.

Painter Ellen Buselli's favorite subject-- still
life-- has evolved since she moved to New York City
after college. After doing a series of still-life
paintings called "Tools of the Trade",
she exhibited them at the Fine Arts Museum of Long
Island. New York Newsday stated that the paintings
"seem to borrow something from the Italian
painter Georgio Morandi in the way in which they
take familiar objects and impart a sort of metaphysical
presence."
Her paintings have an archaic quality indicating
her love of antiquity and echoes of times past.
"I try to create a sense of timelessness in
my paintings. Each painting is a safe haven of quiet
study."
Throughout
her New York experience, Buselli has channeled her
love of the Dutch Masters, Chardin, Fantin La Tour,
Emil Carlsen, Sargent, and Morandi into moody oils
that emulate their sense of chiaroscuro and classical
painting. Her childhood propensity for sketching
and perspective eventually culminated in a Bachelor
of Fine Arts degree from Cornell University plus
study at the Tyler School of Art in Rome, Italy
and the Art Students League in New York.
The
artist, who uses her personal collection of Persian
vases, old Roman glass, pottery from the American
Arts & Crafts Movement and other artifacts for
subject matter, works from a Manhattan studio with
northern exposure that she prefers for its constant
soft and moody light. She has collected recognition
for her work from the American Artist Magazine,
National Academy of Design, Oil Painters of America,
American Women Artists, Allied Artists of America,
the Salmagundi Club, The American Artists Professional
League, The Ridgewood Art Institute and The Artist's
Magazine.
Buselli’s work was recently featured on the
January 2008 cover of American Artist
Magazine.

Born in Columbia, South
Carolina in 1936. Joseph Cave attended the University
of Georgia (Athens, GA) where he studied painting
from 1954-58. He went on to attend the San Francisco
Art Institute (San Francisco, CA) and received a
BFA in Fine Arts in painting in 1962, and a Master
of Arts in 1964 from San Francisco State University.
Cave has taught at several institutions including
The Memphis Academy of Art, Southwestern at Memphis,
San Francisco Art Institute, and San Francisco State
University.
Cave
draws inspiration from early landscape artists,
both American scene painters, and French Impressionists
but his training as an abstract expressionist is
consistently evident. Lines and shadows are the
foundation of his forms that are expressed through
vibrant colors releasing strong emotion. Always
recognizable for his distinctive style, his paintings
exude the confidence of a master.
After
living and painting in Portugal from 1984 until
1989, Cave returned to the Carolinas. Since that
time his paintings have been featured in numerous
one-man shows throughout the United States and abroad.
He now resides in historic Georgetown, South Carolina
with his wife Jessica, where he maintains a studio.

Martha dePoo’s
love of art began at an early age through the nurturing
guidance of her artist mother, Suzie dePoo (Zuzek).
Upon graduating from Key West High School in 1973,
Martha went to work in the art department of Key
West Hand Print Fabrics where she rose to department
head. For twelve years she received invaluable training
in color and design as well as the opportunity to
create numerous tropical motifs for Lilly Pulitzer.
Martha considers herself a life-long student of
art and has studied with Sandford Birdsey and Malcom
Ross, as well as attended many workshops with Charles
Sovek, Frank Webb, Jeanne Dobie and Tom Lynch among
others.
In 1984 dePoo decided
she could finally become a full-time artist. Since
that time she has participated in many juried shows
and has won numerous awards, including First Place
in the Florida Keys Watercolor Society’s Annual
Juried Shows in 2000, 2005, and 2006.
This year the Key
West Art & Historical Society hosted an unprecedented,
10 week one-woman exhibition of dePoo’s paintings
at the Customs House Museum from January until April.
Until recently, the
focus of her work has been the fast disappearing
flavor of old Key West and the neighboring keys
but this year dePoo visited the South Carolina lowcountry
and spent time sketching and photographing. That
visit inspired her to paint her works on view in
our “Down South” show. Martha dePoo’s
richly hued watercolors exude a warmth and vibrancy
that reflect the joy and pace of life in the lowcountry.
Her ever-present sense of humor and insight into
the character and charm of her subjects is always
present in her work.

Born
in Philadelphia, PA., 1921, Ray Ellis attended the
Philadelphia Museum School of Art. His first one-man
show was held in 1947 at the Pennsylvania Academy
of Fine Arts.
After
serving four years in the Coast Guard during WWII,
Ellis founded his own advertising agency in New
Jersey and New York, but continued to paint in his
spare time. During this period he was elected to
the American Watercolor Society, and his works were
widely exhibited and received numerous honors.
In
1969 Ellis was able to devote all his time to painting,
and in 1974 he moved south to Hilton Head Island,
SC and then to Savannah, GA. In 1989 Ellis resettled
in the north where he maintains a home and studio
on Martha's Vineyard with his wife Teddi.
In
the early 80's, Ellis and Walter Cronkite collaborated
on a series of fine art books which celebrate America's
coastlines: South by Southeast, North by Northeast,
and Westwind. In 1992, Ellis authored The Spirit
of Golf with golf journalist Ben Wright.
Paintings
of Savannah and Martha’s Vineyard have been
published in separate volumes: Ray Ellis’
Savannah & the Lowcountry , and Martha’s
Vineyard an Affectionate Memoir. Later published
were Coastal Images of America and The Road to Ballybunion.
The newest book, Ray Ellis Paints Flowers was published
this past year.
Ellis’s
paintings are included in major museums and private
collections throughout the country. His paintings
hang in our American Embassies in Geneva, Vienna,
London, and more recently, Brussels. In 1999, he
was commissioned by the White House to do a series
of paintings of the Rose Garden. In the year 2004,
the Telfair Museum of Savannah, GA mounted a major
retrospective of his work which then traveled to
other museums. Ellis has a special bond with the
South Carolina lowcountry. His great-grandfather,
Richard S. Trapier, once owned Windsor Plantation
on the Black River in Georgetown County. The Cheryl
Newby Gallery has represented Ray Ellis since 1987.

a mysterious alchemy of sensuality and spirituality,
and each figure demonstrates her demand for the
highest degree of excellence and quality in her
work.
Marcus is a fellow
of The National Sculpture Society and has received
many honors and commissions; among them the highly
regarded Gold Medal of Honor (Allied Artists of
America Inc.) She was twice recipient of the Gold
